May 2022 Statement on Dept. of Energy Office of Science Support for Ukrainian Scientists

May 2, 2022 – We share the sentiment of distress at the destruction of Ukraine’s scientific research infrastructure outlined in the recent letter sent out to colleagues by J. Stephen Binkley, Acting Director of the Office of Science of the U.S. Dept. of Energy.

Likewise we are heartened by the Office of Science’s funding opportunity announcement aimed to provide currently-supported Dept. of Energy researchers with additional funds to host or collaborate with students and scientists from Ukraine impacted by the war.

The Office of Science’s intention to coordinate across federal agencies to assist with travel and diplomatic logistics is also deserving of praise and could serve as an example for ongoing inter-agency partnerships. Most importantly, we applaud the vision to empower these students and scientists via such collaboration with the capacity to rebuild their scientific programs after their return to Ukraine.

The Society for Science at User Research Facilities is proud to highlight the crucial, brilliant research across America’s User Facilities network, and we encourage our members to consider the options at their laboratories to create the partnerships to advance scientific discovery across the globe via this uncommon funding opportunity.
