Society for Science at User Research Facilities

Oct. 19 SSURF Annual Meeting: In Person!

Join us for the 2023 Society for Science at User Research Facilities Annual Meeting!

For the first time in years this event will be held in person, this year hosted at the Gaithersburg Marriott Washingtonian Center in Gaithersburg, MD, USA. Get ready for a day filled with engaging discussions, informative presentations, and networking opportunities. Whether you are a seasoned user or just starting your career, this meeting is an opportunity to connect with accomplished individuals across a spectrum of scientific research, as well as leadership, including user administrators, private sector technologists, federal agency officials, and other research stakeholders. As in the past, the SSURF Annual meeting provides critical updates and knowledge around user facilities and related areas of interest and the chance to develop valuable relationships with those across the user facility ecosystem.

Keynote speaker announcement:

Ian Wilson, Ph.D.
Chair, Hansen Professor of Structural Biology,
Department of Integrative Structural and Computational Biology at Scripps Research Institute

Research Focus:
Structural Studies of the Immune System, Viral Pathogens, and Vaccine Design

Dr. Wilson has a distinguished and accomplished record of ground-breaking research on infectious diseases, including influenza, COVID-19, HIV, and many others. Research contributions from the WilsonLab have been pivotal for many of the pioneering studies on immune recognition of microbial pathogens, antigen presentation and structure-based design of vaccine and therapies. Dr. Wilson will discuss the crucial role of user facilities and cross-agency collaborations to his team’s work.

More keynote and session presentations to be announced!

Topics to include highlights from the U.S. Dept. of Energy, National Science Foundation, and other agencies, academic and facility researchers, laboratory communications and operational projects plus discussions on industry relations, facility updates, advocacy and legislative themes, DEI in user facilities and research workforce development, other issues shaping the future of science at user facilities.

The SSURF Annual Meeting will be held following Confab23, the second annual gathering hosted by SSURF member ESNet, October 16-18, 2023. This conference is “designed for scientists across all disciplines who want to vastly improve their workflows and collaborations to accelerate time to discovery; for network engineers from national labs and universities who support science IT services for researchers on their campuses; and for the research networking professionals who partner with ESnet to move data across the world.”

SSURF is thrilled to host a free reception for Confab23 attendees and guests at the Gaithersburg Marriott Washingtonian Center on the evening of Tuesday, October 17th.
