Los Alamos National Laboratory has used high energy protons as a probe in flash radiography for a decade. The proton radiography project (pRad) uses 800 MeV protons from the LANSCE accelerator facility to diagnose dynamic experiments, such as explosive and powder gun experiments, and pulsed-power implosions. The invention of imaging proton radiography (pRad) is the direct result of the synergy between the Laboratory’s defense mission and basic science research scientists and supports the Laboratory’s national security science mission as well as provides for fundamental science discoveries.
